Democracy for Kids Educator, Spanish-speaking

Background

The Committee of Seventy has partnered with Ceiba to bring our Democracy for Kids program to young people across Philadelphia. Democracy for Kids gives children basic civic skills like respectful listening, creative inquiry and thinking, and community problem-solving. These programs illustrate many ways that young people can become engaged citizens in their community.

Job Overview

C70 is seeking a passionate and motivated individual to join our team as an educator to work directly with middle school and high school-aged children in community after-school programs across the city, particularly those that serve our Spanish-speaking communities.

Our organization's mission is to promote voter engagement. This program invites future voters, particularly in neighborhoods that have traditionally been ignored by the political process, to become active participants in government. This position offers an exciting opportunity for someone with a love of working with young people, interest in government and politics, and interest in a part-time engagement.

We strongly believe in the power of diversity, equity, and inclusion. We recognize that a diverse workforce brings together unique perspectives, experiences, and talents, leading to increased creativity, innovation, and better decision-making. As such, we actively seek out and value job applicants from all backgrounds, races, ethnicities, genders, sexual orientation, ages, or disability. Our commitment to DEI extends throughout our hiring process, ensuring equal opportunities and fair treatment for all candidates. We firmly believe that by fostering a diverse and inclusive workplace, we can create a stronger, more vibrant, and more successful organization.

Responsibilities

  • You will receive training on our Democracy for Kids materials from our lead educator.

  • You will travel to different host locations in Philadelphia for hour-long sessions teaching young people about foundational principles of living in a civil society. This includes civil dialogue, community engagement, acting as change agents, and some of the basics of American democracy.

  • C70 will work with Ceiba to coordinate which partners will participate. We will then work with you to determine dates and times, in conjunction with your availability.

Qualifications

  • Experience working with young people is a must. Teaching certifications are preferred but not required.

  • Fluent in Spanish, both written and conversational.

  • Passion for civic engagement and a basic understanding of the issues surrounding voter engagement and advocacy, particularly for people of color.

  • Punctuality and reliability are required.

Rate

  • This position is for an independent contractor.

  • You would be paid per hour-long session at a professional rate, plus prep and post-event debrief time.

  • We plan on scheduling 20-30 sessions, likely between late June-August 2023. There may some interest in sessions in the fall as well.
