Philadelphia City Council Committee on Commerce & Economic Development

The Committee of Seventy announced that it has been awarded major grants totaling $900,000 to support its work to strengthen democracy, elections and civic education in Philadelphia and Pennsylvania. This includes an $800,000 grant from William Penn Foundation, matching their previous investment from 2022—the largest grant Seventy ever received in its history. Seventy will also receive $80,000 from the Agua Fund, and $20,000 from CivXNow, a project of iCivics.

Primary Election Shifts to June 2 with Emergency Provisions

In the previous lesson, students completed a real or hypothetical mail-in ballot application. In this lesson, they will learn how to complete and return their mail-in ballot, as well as how to find their polling place and to cast their ballot in person. They will also learn how to cast a provisional ballot as a last resort. It’s important to walk students through these processes.

To help students discover the breadth and variety of values that Americans hold dear. Then, to help them notice and discuss how sometimes those values can come into tension, not necessarily as a matter of good vs. evil, but more as a matter of competing goods.

In 2026, Philadelphia, the birthplace of American democracy, will mark a pivotal milestone—the 250th anniversary of the United States. Join us at our summit designed to celebrate American democracy while facilitating a necessary dialogue about strengthening it for the future. This summit will offer an opportunity to engage in meaningful conversations with a diverse range of leaders—policymakers, educators, activists, futurists, and engaged citizens—who will address current challenges and work toward actionable solutions for building a more inclusive democracy.
