PHILADELPHIA – March 17, 2014 –The Committee of Seventy today urged the Pennsylvania General Assembly to quickly allow for the creation of an independent counsel to conduct a fair and non-partisan investigation into a dismissed three-year sting operation that allegedly captured on tape four state Representatives taking money from an undercover informant. The operation, which also involved a former Philadelphia Traffic Court judge accepting a bracelet, was reported by The Philadelphia Inquirer yesterday.

The Committee of Seventy was joined by The Welcoming Center, Philadelphia City Councilmember Isaiah Thomas, Philadelphia Chairman Commissioner Omar Sabir, Philadelphia Commissioner Seth Bluestein and community partners to announce that its How Philly Works Guide is now available in Spanish and Chinese, with a French version expected to be released soon.

Mock election brought hands-on voting to classrooms, encouraging future civic participation

The Committee of Seventy announced that it has been awarded major grants totaling $900,000 to support its work to strengthen democracy, elections and civic education in Philadelphia and Pennsylvania. This includes an $800,000 grant from William Penn Foundation, matching their previous investment from 2022—the largest grant Seventy ever received in its history. Seventy will also receive $80,000 from the Agua Fund, and $20,000 from CivXNow, a project of iCivics.

Local jurisdictions will bear the heaviest burden of protecting voters and workers from COVID-19. They need federal funding now.

Between June and November, the Committee of Seventy (Seventy) strengthened its commitment to educating and empowering Philadelphia and Pennsylvania voters. Through partnerships, public programs, multilingual digital and print resources, and accurate, reliable election information, Seventy reached over 350,000 individuals, equipping them with the tools to navigate an intensely scrutinized election with confidence.

Philadelphia, Pa. – Philadelphia 3.0, the Committee of Seventy and several candidates for elected office today filed a lawsuit asking the Pennsylvania Supreme Court to direct the President Judge of the Court of Common Pleas to replace Philadelphia’s City Commissioners with interim election officials for the May 2017 primary. The plaintiffs are represented by attorneys from the Public Interest Law Center and private counsel.

The 17-member Philadelphia City Council has a major role in the everyday lives of city residents. With Council districts being redrawn, now is the time to ensure residents can engage directly in the map-making process.
