Proposed Changes to Political Activity Rules City Council Committee on Law and Government

Seventy urges voters to vote by mail, advises those going to the polls to expect long lines

PHILADELPHIA, PA – The Committee of Seventy announced today the selection of its second cohort of Buchholz Fellows, six promising young Philadelphians who will spend a year as members of the Board of the century-old good government group.

Students will learn how to apply for a mail-in ballot. Eligible students will be able to send their applications in, while students who are not, or are choosing to vote in person, will complete the process to without submitting an application to gain the experience.

To help students discover the breadth and variety of values that Americans hold dear. Then, to help them notice and discuss how sometimes those values can come into tension, not necessarily as a matter of good vs. evil, but more as a matter of competing goods.

To introduce the students to the idea and component steps of active listening and give them practice applying those skills.

This exercise fits well near the launch of a Can We Talk? unit or initiative. It's a good way for students to get to know each other better while practicing the skills of active listening. It's also a relatively low-stress way for students to begin experiencing dialogue. Also, if you plan on using the lesson plan that digs into active listening, more explicitly teaches the skills and habits involved, this exercise is good preparation for that.

This exercise can help participants make an important discovery: that "their" key issues are not the only ones worth caring about, and that other people may frame a shared issue in a way very different from their own.
