Philadelphia, PA – The Committee of Seventy released the following statement in response to the U.S. House of Representatives passing the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act on April 10, 2025, which would “require proof of United States citizenship to register an individual to vote in elections for Federal office, and for other purposes.”
“The passage of the SAVE Act in the U.S. House is a harmful solution in search of a problem that is exceedingly rare. Non-citizens are already prohibited from voting in federal elections, and there is no credible evidence of widespread violations of that law here in Pennsylvania or anywhere in the country.
What the SAVE Act would do is make it harder for all voters to exercise this fundamental right, especially Pennsylvania’s rural voters, veterans, married women who have changed their names, and others who already face challenges accessing the ballot. It would also place an unmanageable burden on local election officials, who have a track record of running Pennsylvania elections successfully year after year, requiring them to verify documents that are difficult and time-consuming to process.
Rather than improving election security, this bill undermines confidence in our elections by feeding false narratives and creating new obstacles for eligible voters.
We urge Senators John Fetterman and Dave McCormick to reject this anti-voter legislation. We have sent each of them letters sharing our position and we encourage other Pennsylvanians to do the same. Our democracy works best when all eligible voters can participate free from fear, misinformation, and unnecessary barriers. Contact your senators today and tell them to vote NO on the SAVE Act.”
