We mourn the loss of Alex Pretti, who was fatally shot yesterday by ICE agents in Minnesota. As we said when Renee Good was killed three weeks ago, our hearts go out to his family, friends, and community, as well as all those impacted by a system that relies on terror, force, and escalation, rather than the rule of law and dignity.
Our system of government requires elected leaders and officials at every level to do their jobs: to exercise meaningful oversight, uphold the Constitution, and provide the checks and balances that are essential to a functioning democracy. Governmental authority must always be exercised within constitutional limits and with respect for both public safety and civil liberties.
We urge everyone to take action to protect and support their communities - to do something. Let your elected officials know what you think. Support civic and community groups that align with your values. Exercise your First Amendment right to protest.
Action and community are the antidote to apathy and overwhelm and now is the time to lock in, not tune out.
