The Committee of Seventy released the following statement regarding a recent directive by the Court regarding the Philadelphia Sheriff’s Office.
“The court’s directive to the Philadelphia Sheriff’s Office to address systemic failures in courthouse security is a crucial step toward meaningful reform. The shortage of deputies and its ripple effects on public safety, trial delays, and the emotional toll on those seeking justice are unacceptable.
We commend the court for holding the Sheriff’s Office accountable and urge Sheriff Bilal to act swiftly and transparently to implement the necessary reforms. Restoring safety and efficiency in our courts is essential to ensuring justice for all Philadelphians.”
