C70: Political Threats Have No Place in a Constitutional Democracy

The Committee of Seventy unequivocally condemns President Donald Trump’s continued threats toward the six Democratic lawmakers who released a video reminding members of the U.S. military and intelligence community of their duty to refuse unlawful orders.

These lawmakers - many of whom are veterans or former national-security professionals - issued a sober, factual reminder of longstanding constitutional and military obligations. Their message was not partisan; it was a reaffirmation that loyalty to the Constitution supersedes loyalty to any individual officeholder.

President Trump’s response - suggesting that these elected officials were committing “sedition” and should face death - is profoundly dangerous. This kind of rhetoric has no place in American political life. It fuels hostility, erodes democratic norms, and increases the risk of violence against public officials. It is especially concerning given the rise in threats faced by lawmakers across the country, including here in Pennsylvania. Representatives Chris Deluzio and Chrissy Houlahan, both featured in the video, have already received threats as a result.

At a time when nearly every day brings a new shocking comment or action from the White House - comments that can escalate anger and division - it is essential to speak clearly and forcefully about the danger of this rhetoric. We can no longer act as though words are harmless or without consequence. We know that some people take these statements seriously and literally, and may feel emboldened to act on them, crossing lines that endanger others.

That reality places a responsibility on all of us: leaders of every political party, and leaders in business, civic life, community organizations, faith communities - and all of us as Americans - to call out unacceptable language when we hear it. Silence allows dangerous rhetoric to take root; speaking up reinforces the norms that keep our democracy safe.

The video restates a basic legal truth: refusing illegal orders is a core American doctrine, not a political provocation.

The Committee of Seventy urges leaders of all parties to reject language that criminalizes political dissent or suggests violence against those who disagree. Democracy depends on free debate, respect for constitutional boundaries, and the safety of those elected to serve.

At a time when threats against public officials are increasing - and when responsible civic leadership is urgently needed - statements that cast political opponents as enemies to be punished undermine the very foundations of our republic. All Americans, regardless of political affiliation, should insist on a higher standard.
