Political Parties

Pennsylvania officially recognizes four political parties, with various chapters across the state. As of October 2020, Pennsylvania has officially recognized the Republican party, the Democratic party, the Green party, and the Libertarian party.

In Philadelphia county, for every 1 Republican voter there are 7 Democratic voters whereas in Pennsylvania the difference between voters is about 1:1. Pennsylvania is one of 22 states that allows candidates to use political party designations if they qualify as independent but prefer a different label.
