What is one life experience you have that voters should know about?

My wife, Liz, and I have been together since we were 18 and 20 years old, we have five children, four of them now adults, and one no longer with us, and the values of our family have informed much of my legislation, such as the bill ending child marriage, the bill reforming child custody to ensure that the best interest of the child is the top priority, firearm safety bills, as well as my support of other legislation that helps working families.

What sets you apart from other candidates?

I listen much more than I talk, when conversing with residents and when working with other legislators, and I use my education, life, work and business experience to achieve the goals of the residents and communities I represent.

How do you plan to work across ideological lines to achieve shared goals?

Most of the legislature's work is bipartisan, and much of it is unanimous. Two of my bills this summer passed unanimously in the House and Senate and were signed into law by Governor Shapiro. A bill I introduced three months into my time in the House in 2017, that ultimately ended child marriage in Pennsylvania, that I joined with a Republican member from western PA and reintroduced in his name in 2018, passed unanimously and was signed into law by then-Gov. Wolf in 2020. By working together on shared goals, those shared goals get accomplished, and when ideological lines differ, there remains mutual respect and an ability to engage in dialogue and work toward achieving goals notwithstanding ideological differences without comprising on values.

What would be your top three policy priorities in office?

The first priority is to continue to do my best in representing our residents and communities. With respect to the policy priorities, what I call the three E's are top priorities in my district: Economy, Education and Environment. Economy includes increasing the minimum wage and ensuring livable wages and supporting local businesses and a fair economy. Education includes pre-K, primary and secondary, vocational and college education and ensuring a safe educational environment, free from gun violence. Environment includes clean air and water and sustainable energy policy. Each of those priorities, in fact all my priorities, focus on maintaining and improving quality of life in the communities I represent and the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.

The Committee of Seventy has partnered with the Carter Center to promote the Candidate Principles for Trusted Elections (www.principledcandidates.org) to improve the voting process, encourage honest leadership, and promote civic engagement. Do you support the Candidate Principles?

I agree with the principles set forth in the Candidate Principles for Trusted Elections.
