What is one life experience you have that voters should know about?
I think my early life experience is something I’d like voters to know about. After serving in the Navy, I worked at UPS to put myself through both college and law school. This experience helps me to never forget where I came from and the power of hard work.
What sets you apart from other candidates?
I am the only candidate in this race with courtroom experience. I don’t know how someone can be the chief law enforcement officer in Pennsylvania without having worked in the criminal justice system. I have spent my career as a prosecutor starting as a line prosecutor in the York County District Attorney’s office, becoming head of litigation, becoming a Special Assistant US attorney and finally being the twice elected District Attorney in York County.
How do you plan to work across ideological lines to achieve shared goals?
I grew up in a Democratic household. When I look at the criminal justice system I don’t see a Republican way or a Democratic way of doing things. Rather, there is a lot of collaboration happening in this space as demonstrated by the Criminal Justice Reform Caucus in the State Legislature and the recent passage of Clean Slate legislation that is helping people rebuild their lives. The issues that we deal with like drug addiction and violence cuts across political lines. It is critical that our prosecutorial officials do not allow politics to influence the decisions that are made.
How do you envision the role of Attorney General interacting with other branches of government to effectively serve the interests of the Commonwealth?
The Attorney General is by nature a collaborative position. The Attorney General must collaborate with local law enforcement agencies and prosecutors, with US Attorneys and federal law enforcement agencies, and of course with the State Legislature, the Governor and our courts. As a District Attorney, I have a proven track record of bringing people together to bring about change in our communities through collaborative efforts with our local police, churches, health systems and community leaders to combat crime in York. I will bring that experience with me to the Attorney General’s office to bring accountability and redemption to our criminal justice system.
