The Role of the US Representative
The U.S. House of Representatives is the lower chamber of Congress, intended to be more accessible and responsive to constituents. Working with the U.S. Senate, members of the House introduce and pass laws, which the president may sign or veto. Similar to other chamber, members serving on committees can conduct hearings and investigations on matters they deem important.
The House is also primarily responsible for introducing revenue-raising bills and has the power to initiate impeachment proceedings against federal officials. The reapportionment of the House’s 435 seats is based on the population among the states and conducted every 10 years after the Census. After the 2020 Census, the number of seats allocated to Pennsylvania decreased from 18 to 17, each district with a population of roughly 760,000. House members are elected for two-year terms, and there are no term limits.
