Philadelphia, PA - President and CEO of the Committee of Seventy, Lauren Cristella, released the following statement regarding recent developments in the presidential election process:

“In light of President Biden's recent announcement to step aside in the upcoming presidential election and endorse his Vice President as the Democratic nominee, the Committee of Seventy recognizes this historic moment and its potential impact on the nation, and Pennsylvania specifically.

For nearly two and a half centuries, our model of self-governance has been the standard bearer for a durable and defined electoral process. Although it is highly unusual for the presumptive nominee of a major political party to withdraw from the presidential race, our institutions are prepared for this. There are procedures in place to address this situation and ensure free, fair, safe and secure elections.  Political parties are responsible for selecting their nominee according to their internal guidelines. If a presumptive nominee steps down before the official nomination, the party will adhere to its established protocols, which typically involve making the final decision before or during the nominating convention.

In this specific case, the Democratic Party will determine the appropriate course of action, with delegates casting their votes to confirm a nominee at or prior to the Democratic National Convention this August. Ballots for the general election will only be printed after delegates of the Democratic Party elect their nominee.

While this process may look different, there’s still an opportunity to make your voice heard by contacting your state party leaders.

Since 1904, as a nonpartisan good government and civic education organization, the Committee of Seventy has focused on preserving election integrity for the oldest continuous democracy in the world. We encourage all citizens to stay informed, engage in the democratic process, and exercise their right to vote in every election. Together, we can ensure a stable and prosperous future for our nation.

We’re committed to providing information voters need to make informed decisions and understand this process, especially in this historic moment. We’ll be providing updates and resources as this situation develops, so be sure to check our website regularly and follow us on social media.”
