What is one life experience you have that voters should know about?

I served as an Assistant D.A. from 1985 to 1988, in the Philadelphia District Attorney's Office. After leaving the DA's Office and returning from military service, I ran a free legal services program for a year without pay. After I opened my private law practice, I handled criminal defense matters. I have an in-depth and broad understanding of our criminal justice system, and where it succeeds and where it fails. That knowledge is critical in reducing gun violence and violent crime while ensuring civil rights are protected and justice is served.

What would be your top three policy priorities in office?

My three priorities would be to make Philadelphia safe, create good jobs and provide quality schools in every neighborhood.

What sets you apart from other candidates?

I believe in policing and law enforcement as the most effective deterrent to violent crime and reckless behavior. I believe it is the best way to save lives and prevent people from making bad decisions that will ruin their lives. I will rebuild the Philadelphia Police Department into the finest in the nation and ensure that all criminal and public safety laws are lawfully and properly enforced. As an independent-minded Republican Council member, I have been a true outsider while serving in city government. I am a proven reformer with a history of challenging the political establishments on both sides. I am more likely to make dramatic reforms, and they are long overdue.

How do you plan to work across ideological lines to achieve shared goals?

I have worked across ideological lines as a Councilman At-Large, for the past 11 years. If elected Mayor of Philadelphia, I will continue to work with elected and appointed leaders of every background and political party.

The Committee of Seventy has partnered with the Carter Center to promote the Candidate Principles for Trusted Elections to improve the voting process, encourage honest leadership, and promote civic engagement. Do you support the Candidate Principles?
